Club History

In the late 1950's, community developer Mr. Ed Richards had a vision. This vision was to create a community oriented swim and social club for the neighborhood he was developing. At the same time he was developing the first indoor shopping mall in Raleigh, the North Hills Mall; with that, Mr. Richards built the framework for what is today's North Hills Club and surrounding neighborhood.
On June 5th, 1961 North Hills Club was incorporated with a quaint clubhouse, 3 hard tennis courts and a family pool; all nestled among the tall pines on 16-acres in the heart of North Raleigh. After development was completed, Mr. Richards turned the Club over to the membership and then president of the Board of Directors, Mr. B. J. Baker. About 20 years later with the member families nearing 500, the club made its first major expansion that served the membership well for the next 25 years. During that time our reputation for tennis and swim programming rose to admirable heights.
Then, in March of 2007 we completed construction of a new clubhouse to cater to our current 800 membership families. The new clubhouse facilities include a state-of-the-art 2,500 square foot fitness center with separate aerobic room, men's and women's locker rooms each complete with a steam room, cycle spinning room, 66 seat casual dining restaurant, 55 seat adult lounge, 175 seat ballroom, kid's activity room, poolside snack bar, executive meeting room, and a large, full service, tennis pro shop with a tournament room.
Since that time, we have just celebrated our 50th anniversary. North Hills Club has grown into a full-scale family centric wellness and athletic club. Today the club's amenities include 22 tennis courts, 3 swimming pools complete with a pool bath house, 100 foot long water slide, and 2 poolside party cabanas, large outdoor open air pavilion, children's playground, ample 300 car parking lot, and our beautiful 25,000 square foot clubhouse.
We now have one of the strongest tennis programs in the state that caters to players of all levels, from beginner to elite. The North Hills Club tennis department includes league teams, other competitive programs, social events, and instructional programs. We also have a summer day camp for children, as well as competitive swim and dive teams during the summer plus many other children's programs.
NHC rounds all this out with first rate banquet facilities and catering operations plus the finest casual dining available in the Triangle. This list is not all inclusive, but as you can see we have a lot to offer here at North Hills Club. It is definitely the premier family club of the region.
