North Hills Club Tennis offers everything that a family could want in a tennis program. We feature 22 outdoor courts with 18 clay and 4 hard surface courts. Fourteen of our soft courts and the four hard courts are lighted to accommodate night play. Our hard courts have been outfitted with permanent Quickstart lines which provide us eight 36 foot courts and four 60 foot courts for junior training and competition. We currently host three USTA Sanctioned Junior Tournaments and 1 USTA Sanctioned Adult NTRP tournament annually. We also host the Hunter Snow Charity Mixed Doubles Tournament which raises $10,000-15,000 annually for the United Methodist Children's Home. We have been the host site for the Raleigh Women's Challenger, a USTA Women's Pro Circuit event. Our current USTA programs include: Adult League Play, Junior Team Tennis, Ten and Under, and Cardio Tennis. We are also a Tennis Welcome Center.

We have seven resident teaching professionals with a wide range of experience teaching adults as well as juniors. Our pro shop offers a huge selection of men's, women's and children's tennis clothing, tennis racquets, and footwear. In addition, we have two full time racquet stringers offering same day stringing and racquet customization.

Due to the success of our programs the Club has won numerous awards. In 2007 the club won the USTA Facility of the Year Award (private) and was also recognized as a top 50 Tennis Welcome Center by the Racquet Sports Industry. Most recently the club was selected as the 2011 USTA North Carolina Member Organization of the Year. We have also been selected as a participating member for the Triangle Area Early Development Center for 10 and under tennis.

Shane Wells
Tennis Director
As the Tennis Director, Shane is responsible for overall operations of the Tennis Department. Shane began his tenure at North Hills Club in January of 2006, coming from the Governors Club in Chapel Hill, where he was Tennis Director for 10 years. Shane is a USPTA P-1 Professional and USTA High Performance Coach. Shane is a graduate of East Carolina University. He has an extensive teaching background with adults and juniors. He currently sits on the NCTA Junior Competition Committee, is a member of the Nike Club Pro Program and the Prince Elite Team. 2010 USTA Southern Tennis Pro of the Year, 2010 USTA NC Co-Recipient Tennis Pro of the Year, 2010 USPTA NC Tennis Pro of the Year, and Recipient of the 2010 Mary Milan Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the NCTA.

Prior to coming to North Hills Club in January 2006, Shane was Director of Tennis at Governor's Club in Chapel Hill for 10 years.

He graduated from East Carolina University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education and is a USPTA P-1 Professional. In 1993, he was named Assistant Tennis Professional of the Year by the NCATP. He has been a USTA Competition Training Center Coach since 1995 and a USTA Zonal Coach since 1998. In 2002 and 2003, he was named Junior Davis/Federation Cup Coach for North Carolina. Some of his other accomplishments and awards include completing Level 1&2 Sports Science Competency Tests, the USTA High Performance Coaching Program, receiving the North Carolina Junior Tennis Council Award, and being named to the NCTA Junior Competition Committee. He has extensive teaching background with adults and juniors, ranging from beginners to advanced. He is a member of the Nike Club Pro Program and Prince Elite Team.

Shane resides in Cary, with his wife Angela, daughter Ashley and son Michael.

Katrina Barnes - Head Tennis Professional

Katrina has been with North Hills since April 2006. In addition to teaching adult and junior clinics, she teaches private lessons to for all ages and skill levels. Katrina also helps run special events, tournaments, and club programs. She is certified USPTA P-1 and a USTA Official and Referee. Katrina participated in a USPTA High Performance workshop for 10 and under.

Katrina grew up playing competitive tennis in Durham, North Carolina. She traveled for competitive tournaments in North Carolina, Southern Section, and nationally. She held singles rankings as high #2 in NC, #20 in the South, and #77 in the Nation. She held doubles rankings as high as #1 in NC, #1 in the south, and #5 in the Nation. She was back to back Doubles Southern Closed Champion in '94 and '95.
Katrina earned a tennis scholarship at North Carolina State University and graduated in 2003. She was named Co-Captain for the Women's team both her junior and senior year.

Katrina is married to Trey Barnes. She has a daughter Elena. In her free time, Katrina still enjoys playing competitive tennis. She participants in USTA mixed doubles leagues, Raleigh Pro League, and in a few tournaments a year.

Rich Henderson - Assistant Tennis Director

Having previously been the tennis director at North Ridge Country Club here in Raleigh and at Cape Fear Country Club in Wilmington, Rich has also coached a total of 2 national and 10 state championship high school tennis teams in his career with New Hanover High School and Ravenscroft School respectively. As a player at UNC-Chapel Hill, Rich was a part of 4 ACC championship teams.
 
Liz Perkins - Head Tennis Professional

Liz Perkins is the Adult Tennis Coordinator and Head Pro at North Hills Club. Liz started working at North Hills Club in 2007 after spending 4 years teaching at the Raleigh Racquet Club. Liz is a certified USPTA P1 Teaching Professional and a USTA Official. In 2010 Liz participated in a USTA High Performance Workshop for 10 and Under.

Liz is a native of Centerville, OH where she was a nationally ranked junior tennis player. Liz was a scholarship player at Division 1 James Madison University where she played #1 and #2 singles and #1 doubles. Liz's experience encompasses coaching adult and kids of all levels as well as once coaching USTA 12's Southern Cup Championships. She also helps run special events, club programs and tournaments.

In addition to coaching, Liz still plays USTA League Tennis and the Raleigh Pro League.

Liz resides in Raleigh with her husband David.

Tyler Roberts - Assistant Tennis Pro

Tyler grew up in Charlotte, as a nationally ranked junior under Calvin Davis. Tyler played at UNCG (93-97) and finished as captain and all conference for the team. He has been teaching tennis for 18 years in Winston Salem, Charlotte, Greensboro and now Raleigh. Tyler truly enjoys making tennis players better whether a beginner or at a 5.0 level, as he has taken many juniors to high level tournaments and adults to Pinehurst and beyond.

Brady Herman - Assistant Tennis Pro

Brady Herman grew up playing competitive tennis in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He went on to play at Elon University where he graduated in 2009 with a degree in Business Administration. While in college, he taught part-time as an Assistant Tennis Professional at Olde Forest Racquet Club, and in the junior programs at Elon University Tennis Camp and the Chapel Hill Tennis Club.

Since August 2009, Brady has been the Head Tennis Pro at Pine Valley Country Club in Wilmington, North Carolina. There, he d eveloped a highly successful junior program, along with teaching private lessons and clinics for juniors and adults of all levels. He is a USPTA Certified Professional and is dedicated to the improvement of the sport for tennis enthusiasts of all ages and levels.He has been at North Hills since June 2011.
