Junior Development Program
North Hills Club has an extensive junior program that allows juniors of all skill levels and ages to participate nearly year round. Our integrated programs are designed so that players continue to develop skills at each level as they age up and become more proficient. The spring sessions run March-May, summer programs run June-August and the fall sessions run September-November. We also offer winter programs for Pre-Tournament and Academy. Our goal is to teach juniors the skills they need to play the sport for a lifetime and to have fun. Players are divided by skill level, then age and transitioned to a more appropriate group at the recommendation of the coaching staff. All of our junior programs with the exception of the Academy are open to members only.
Mighty Tykes (Ages 5 & 6)
This program is a fun introduction to the basic skills of athletic movements, balance and hand eye coordination. Kids will have fun making contact with the ball even if it is not over the net. This age group will be using a 36 foot court, red ball (stage 3), a portable net and a 19 or 21 inch racquet. New skills learned will be controlling the racquet and ball, hitting the ball from the side of the body, hitting targets, volley's and underhand serves. Spring and fall sessions are after school from 4:00-4:30 Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Eight and Under
As the kids progress they will learn the basic skills of balance, throwing, reaction speed, agility and coordination. This age group will enjoy the experience of hitting over the net using a 36 foot court and red ball (stage 3) with a portable net. These juniors should be using either a 21 or 23 inch racquet. The new skills they will learn include forehand/backhand ground strokes, volleys, overheads, serves, returns, rallies from the baseline and how to keep score. Juniors may participate in USTA tournaments on a 36 foot court If they are interested in taking their game to the next level and get a taste of competition. This is a transitional age grouping and based on acquired skills and development the kids will participate in either the Mighty Tykes Group or move to the Futures Group.
The Mighty Tykes spring and fall sessions are after school from 4:00-4:30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The Futures Group spring and fall sessions are after school from 4:30-5:30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Futures (10 and under)
This group will have juniors that are beginners and intermediates. The juniors in this group will be playing on a 60 foot court with the orange (stage 2). This group will be required to use either a 23 or 25 inch racquet. The juniors will continue to work on improving their balance, throwing, reactions, speed agility and coordination. The juniors will work on stroke development, learn to keep score and begin to play singles and doubles. As they progress they move into the next group.
Spring and fall sessions are after school from 4:30-5:30 on Tuesday and Thursdays.
10 and under advanced - This class is designed for the juniors who are starting to compete. They continue the progressive development of their footwork, strokes and begin to compete against other juniors. They need to be able to rally consistently, serve, and keep score. The group plays on a 60 foot court with the orange ball (stage 2). The juniors are allowed to use a 23 or 25 inch racquet to compete. We also have Junior Team Tennis matches for these juniors who want to play.
12 and under (Bronze) - This group is designed for advanced beginners and intermediate level players, who have some experience and want to improve their stroke production and begin to play competitive tennis. We continue the development of their technique, movement and advanced tactics. This group will play on a regulation court with green (stage 1) ball. This group will also participate in Junior Team Tennis against other teams in the city. We also encourage these juniors to begin to participate in USTA Level 5 junior tournaments to get more competition.
Silver Team - This program is composed of juniors who are starting to play competitive sanctioned tennis tournaments and individuals who are interested in participating on their school tennis team. A working knowledge of the scoring of tennis and the rules of the game are necessary to participate in this program. Juniors should be able to rally consistently with other players and show consistency in every stroke. Emphasis will be placed on conditioning, consistency and game/point strategy. This group will also participate in USTA Junior Team Tennis against other teams from the city.
These programs run year-round with the spring and fall sessions on Tuesday and Thursdays from 5:30-6:30 and Junior Team Tennis on Saturdays. The summer program is on Monday and Wednesday from 2-3 with Junior Team Tennis on Tuesday and Thursdays at 1:30. The winter program runs from Dec- Feb. and meets Tuesday and Thursday 4-5 and Saturdays 11:00-12:30.
North Hills Tennis Academy (NHTA)
This program is North Hills Club elite level of junior tennis players. These players will be competing regularly at the State, Southern and National Level. North Hills Tennis Academy provides a setting to improve a player's fitness, mental game, strategy and tactics. Each Academy player is expected to show a high level of commitment, exhibit a consistently strong work ethic and sportsmanship. Juniors should have good stroke production and have a general idea about their personal game style. The juniors should be competent in all technical aspects of the game and have a willingness to improve. The juniors will be expected to be motivated to perform at a high level each and every workout and will be required to fill out a Developmental Plan including personal goal setting. We provide the juniors the opportunity and the tools that will be required to play tennis at the college level. This is the only junior program at North Hills that is open to non members.
Graduates of this program have gone to play college tennis at the following universities: N.C. State, Catawba College, East Carolina, Richmond, UNCW, Longwood, Washington and Lee, LSU and Valparaiso.
This is a year round program that meets every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 4-6. The summer workouts are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 3-5.
Summer Camp Program
Our summer camp program runs from June through August and is an excellent way to get kids introduced to tennis. All players are welcomed to this half day camp that runs Monday-Thursday from 9:00-12:00 and includes instruction, refreshments and lots of fun games. We use the Quickstart format for 10 and under tennis in this program. Registration usually begins the first week of May and you may sign up by the week throughout the summer. Summer camps run concurrently with the other junior programs listed above.
Camp Sessions run Monday-Thursday with rain make-ups on Fridays.
